FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) The Army's bomb disposal units have been in high demand as explosives became the weapon of choice against troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. But now with fewer troops in Iraq, these specialized units have resumed what was once an annual competition to find the Army's best bomb hunters.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team of the Year competition this year at Fort Campbell, Ky., is the first time the event has been held in a decade. The three-day event this week tests their skills against suicide vests, improvised rocket launchers and deadly munitions.
Command Sgt. Maj. Harold Dunn, from the 192nd Ordnance Battalion at Fort Bragg, N.C., says there's no lack of work for the soldiers, who risk their lives to protect others from the top killer in today's wars.
