The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating a body of a man found in Monument Creek near Van Buren and Beacon.

The original call came in for medical aid, after a woman walking the trail spotted the body. The Fire Department first responded to the call, but the Police Department was then called when it became apparent the person had been dead for some time.

"There is a body down there, that looks at least partially decomposed," Sgt. Darrin Abbink says. "It's trapped under debris and the sand in the river bed itself, and is partially submerged at this point."

The body was removed shortly after noon, and was determined to be a man in his 30s. Because of the condition of the body, the cause of death was not apparent. An autopsy will be performed.

At this point, investigators are treating it as a homicide.
