The south slope of Pikes Peak is closed to the general public. But you have the opportunity to hike the beautiful, rugged terrain this summer, in a series of guided hikes. One will be this Saturday, July 31.

The South Slope ranges from 10,500' to 12,000'. Hike participants will learn about the history of the site, the purpose of the watershed, information about the sensitivity of the site, such as the wetlands and Bighorn Sheep lambing areas. Information will also be provided for the future development of the trailheads and trail.

Tours will begin at the main parking lot of Red Rock Canyon at Highway 24 and Ridge Road, just past 31st Street. Participants will caravan to the South Slope. Tours leave Red Rock Canyon at 8 a.m. and return around 3 p.m. The hikes are $10 per participant and reservations are required. Call the Trails and Open Space Coalition at 719-633-6884 to register.
