ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Parts of upstate New York are buried under up to 20 inches of heavy snow, with freezing rain, sleet and 30-mph winds added to the mix.

The weather has forced scores of schools to cancel or delay classes.

The National Weather Service says 10 to 20 inches of snow has fallen across much of the state's eastern half, from the Finger Lakes to the Hudson Valley. East of the Hudson River and across portions of the southeastern Catskill region, a mixture of sleet, ice and snow is creating treacherous driving conditions.

The Thruway Authority has banned tandem trucks between Exit 17 at Newburgh and Exit 45 near Rochester.
